Maintaining the Chip Lead in Hold ‘em Poker!

Great. So you have used some clever strategies, made good decisions, and you find yourself as the chip leader. The only problem is, you don’t know how to maintain the lead. This is a very common problem for new and experienced players alike. Below I will outline three very simple ways that you can keep your stack high once you have made it to the top.

Be the Bully

Have you ever been at a table with a bully? This is a chip leader who has a significantly larger amount of chips than anyone else at the table and uses them to scare other players off of large pots. I remember when I first encountered this type of player and I decided that I would never be the bully. But you know what, it works. The trick is just not to get too big headed. So throw your weight around and let the other players know who the boss is.

Don’t Get In Showdowns With Big Stacks

When you’re at the top, you may be tempted to try eliminating your closest competition. This can end up being a fatal error because if you lose the hand, you will probably have the shortest stack afterwards. Instead you want to aim for the medium and small stacks. This way you are risking less chips as well as making more room at the table.

Don’t Get Cocky

Being in the lead tends to make players loosen their betting strategy and make calls and bets that they know they normally wouldn’t make. Newsflash: having the most chips DOES NOT improve your odds. The only thing it improves is how many chips you are now able to lose.

Being in the lead offers you many new strategies and opens up opportunities for larger gains. Remember to throw your weight around occasionally when you are in the lead, but not every hand. If you get caught, you can pay big and probably lose respect at the table, making bluffing nearly impossible.
