Microsoft Abandons Internet Explorer 8!

Redmond, WA – As the Mozilla Foundation releases Firefox 3 and tries to set a record for most downloads in a day, they will be receiving help from an unlikely source: Microsoft. Steve Ballmer announced early Monday that Microsoft would be halting development on Internet Explorer 8 and focusing the company’s efforts on Firefox 3. “I’m going to be downloading it myself, and I’ve told all our employees to download Firefox 3 on Tuesday and instructed our programming teams to start working on making the open source browser better rather than stumble around with Internet Explorer 8,” said Ballmer. “I mean, why bother? Firefox 3 has the ‘AwesomeBar,’ you can’t seriously expect to compete with that, can you?”

Ballmer said that Firefox 3.0 will be the standard browser included with Windows 7 installations along and will replace Internet Explorer 7 on Windows Vista SP2. “We’ve been looking for something to try to salvage Vista, and this could be it,” said Ballmer.

The Mozilla Foundation was surprised by the news. Carmen Pinter, head of press relations for the Foundation, said, “We’re closing in on 20% of the marketplace, and we know Microsoft is worried, but we didn’t expect this. We predicited capitulation with the release of Firefox 4.0 in 2011 which will have the ‘TotallyAwesomeBar.’”

Ballmer pleaded with other browser makers to coalesce around Firefox. “Why should we have so many programming hours going into different browsers? It’s so easy for everyone to contribute to Firefox. Safari and Opera programmers should get on board too. If we all rally around one browser then consumers will be the big winners, and that’s always been a priority for Microsoft,” said Ballmer.

The programmers working on Internet Explorer 8 were excited. “I can’t wait to stop working on IE8, fucking thing sucks. Most people around here already use Firefox anyway and are sick of doing it Live,” said browser programming team leader William Reily. The Mozilla Foundation said it welcomed any contributors to the project, even from its arch rival Microsoft except “we don’t want any of the people responsible for Internet Explorer 6. They could set back Firefox decades.”

All of us developer types generally use Firefox anyway. I have no need for IE. Microsoft has proven that they do not care nor have the marbles to create a stable browser. Let it die, man! With browsers like Firefox and Opera, not to mention Google Chrome and other up-and-comers, IE is useless to me!

You can say that again! Ive been using firefox since day one and I love it, the sheer amount of plugins alone beats the tar out of ie! Its also open source software so you can pretty much taylor it to your every need, what more could you want. Ive always hated the way ie takes over your whole o.s. since it is intergrated with windows. The only reason its market share is so high is most people (Newbies) wont change cause they either belive in the holy grail of Microsoft or to old or lazy to take the time to read about better options.

Not to mention the millions at work, cafes, libraries, schools and other institutions that are restricted from using anything else!!! Yeah dont forget about those stats. Anyway how you could miss firefox slaying ie all over the net is beyond me! Id never go back to ie and all its bugs and problems. Firefox rulez and thats just how the cookie crumbles! If you agree or disagree Id love to here about it in the comments and why!

DashCommerce

http://www.dashcommerce.org

If you are a advocate of all things Microsoft this wont be the first time you’ve come a cropper with finding open source software. One of the only Open source .NET e-commerce platforms on the market we could lay claim to was Dashcommerce (formerly the Microsoft Commerce Starter Kit) at its present status can only provide us with Paypal support for payment integration, and its lead developer has recently announced that the Roadmap for the product appears to be going in a more commerce route. If you need one of the other payment vendors listed above, you are going to have to rip the source code apart and tackle it yourself. Some sites which have been built using Dash include Grossi Wines and GoWheelChair.

Notable Features

  • Single Page Checkout
  • Partial Refunds
  • Configurable Shipping Rates
  • Drop-In Themes / Skinning

X-Cart

http://www.x-cart.com

Whilst not free, X-Cart costs $229.00 for the Gold version (see features here) and $575.00 for the professional version (see features here). X-Cart is well thought of piece of software amongst the developer community. X-Cart is an easy-to-use cart, although many customers say that its learning curve is too difficult for beginners. A knowledge of the templating engine that it uses (Smarty) would be a major advantage if you do decide to use it, and would make the learning curve that bit easier.

Notable Features

  • Unlimited product options
  • Variety of payment gateways
  • Import/export all types of X-Cart
  • Real-time USPS, FedEx and UPS shipping calculation
  • Support for E-goods
  • Membership levels and membership-based pricing
  • Add-To-Cart buttons for existing websites

LiteCommerce

http://www.litecommerce.com

LiteCommerce is developed by the same people as X-Cart, and is a cut down version of the product. It really lends itself towards smaller stores, and if you are needing a quick version, with easier code maintainance that works then LiteCommerce is for you. It also has a few features such as the bulk shopping add on option which X-Cart doesn’t have. LiteCommerce has 97% of its source code open - whilst X-Cart has 100%, but for some developers this stipulation wont factor much. LiteCommerce also uses the FLEXY template engine, whereas X-Cart uses Smarty.

Notable Features

  • 27 Payment Gateways
  • Gentler learning curve than X-Cart
  • FLEXY template Engine
  • No programming required to Setup -Windows Program
  • Control Panel for Windows

But if you clients budget doesn’t stretch that far, and you would be happy to integrate a shop with a hosted solution you wont go far wrong with Shopify, see below:

Shopify

http://www.shopify.com

Shopify - built on Ruby on Rails technology is a full-stack hosted e-commerce package, which basically means everything you need is right there at your fingertips. You shop will be Standards-compliant, fully customizable and requires very little technical skill to get going. Best of all setting up a store is free Creating a store is free. Shopify takes a 3.75% commission on all sales, which can take the fear of setting a shop up away for some clients who want to test the water.

Notable Features

  • Faster and Easier to setup than any other solution
  • SEO Build in! Shopify has been designed by SEO experts and every default theme is carefully crafted with SEO in mind
  • Discount codes with fine-grained options
  • XML Sitemap automatically generated for search engine indexing
  • A full featured Asset system which lets you use and re-use your stock photography, logos or product pdf’s wherever you need them.
  • New order notifications via email, RSS, and on your mobile phone with SMS messaging

With e-commerce webdesign really starting to take off, its never been more important to choose a platform which suits you as a developer (i.e. one that you can support) and one that will provide your clients with the features that they need to run a successful online shop.

There are a number of ways of getting a shop online, and we’ve focused primarily on open source e-commerce platforms here.

OsCommerce

http://www.oscommerce.com

OsCommerce has a number of store owners on its books, notable customers include TruffleShuffle and LinuxUk.

So what features do you get with OsCommerce? There are multiple payment Gateway’s to choose from including (but not limited to) - 2Checkout.com, Authorize.Net, ChronoPay, iPayment, PayNova, Paypal, PSIGate, SecPay and TrustCommerce.

As expected from a platform such as this its jam-packed with features

Notable Features

  • Supports unlimited products and categories
  • Multicurrency support
  • Support for physical (shippable) and virtual (downloadable) products
  • Object oriented PHP backend
  • Web Browser Install and Plugin support

Problems - front end of OsCommerce is not developed using CSS, therefore skinning and reskinning is a bit of a nightmare, that said installation is a breeze - and if you are more comfortable with tables then OsCommerce is probably for you.

You can however always add on one of the popular template systems plugins and save some time -but its not supported out of the box. The code base is also overly complex which makes extending more difficult.

OsCommerce is widely popular and thus has a larger support base, and forum if you need help.

ZenCart

http://www.zencart.com

Zencart’s website doesn’t do justice to the professionalism of the end product, and although it doesn’t not offer as many payment processing options as OsCommerce and other e-commerce platforms it is a more mature product, with OsCommerce often taking quite a long time to release fixes for important issues such as security. ZenCart is a fork of OsCommerce so you can expect very similar sorts of features, its also easier for the newbie developer to get into than Osc. Payment gateways include LinkPoint, Authorize.Net and Paypal.

Notable Features

  • User frontend is validated to XHTML 1.0 Transitional
  • Any PHP coding changes can be protected during upgrades by using the built-in override protection system
  • Integrate with phpBB
  • Meta Tags keywords and descriptions can be controlled at the per-product level

VirtueMart

http://www.virtuemart.net

VirtueMart is an Open Source E-Commerce solution designed to be used with Joomla! (but also works with Mambo). Joomla and VirtueMart are written in PHP and made for easy use in a PHP / MySQL environment.

Notable Features

  • Stock Level Control for Products and Item
  • Ajax-powered Product Overview allows to quickly add Products to the cart
  • Product Attributes (like Size or Color) can be added to Product
  • Manage different Currencies, Countries & States
  • Product Availability: show how fast a Customer can expect delivery

Payment Gateways supported include Authorize.net, PayPal, 2Checkout, eWay, Worldpay, PayMate and NoChex. If you have an existing Joomla based site, integration is particularly easy <5 face="monospace">

Free CMS options for web design!

Typo 3

Technology : PHP Supported
RDMS: MySQL, Oracle, MS-SQL, ODBC
Setup time: 45 minutes+
Supported OS: Windows / Unix / MacOSX

Features:

  • On page editing
  • Intuitive Tree Structure for pages , folders and files
  • Internal Search Engine
URL: http://typo3.com
FEATURE URL:
http://typo3.com/Feature_list.1243.0.html

If you are looking for power over simplicity then Typo 3 is one such option. Starting out with TYPO3 does require time and dedication, both from an administrative point of view. End users can expect to spend around 45 minutes plus to get up and running with the admin tools, depending on how IT literate they are at the minute. To take advantage of its full power, you will need to get your reading glasses out. Admins are going to get it tough, there is significant documentation - 1600 (and counting) pages of references and tutorials, and you are going to have to read at least some of it. However there is no question forum on their website, which you would expect from an Open source solution such as this. On the plus side, the features this product offers are second to none, and are continuing to grow through the PHP development community, and some of the clients using this include large brands such as Philips and the Museum of Science and Industry Chicago.

Cushy CMS

Technology : Browser Based (PHP engine)
Setup time: 5 minutes+
Supported OS: N/A - hosted

Features:

  • On page editing
  • Extremely Simple

URL: http://www.cushycms.com/

If Typo 3 is the Rolls Royce of the CMS world, then Cushy CMS has got to be a Mini. A fluffy Light and Small web 2.0 application this CMS is one of the easiest and quickest to get up and running with, although it is strictly a hosted solution, and to run it you need to provide your FTP details through Cushy’s website. In order to set the system up you simply add css styles to the sections which need changed, Cushy then changes the page on the fly, and sends it back to the ftp server itself. I would be a little worried about the security implications of passing FTP details over cleartext, and it obviously has to keep a hold on your passwords *somewhere* on its own server..which in my opinon is a bit of a risk. From their own website: “CushyCMS accesses and stores sensitive website login data as part of its daily operations. While we will take every reasonable precaution to secure these details (including the use of database data encryption), we will not accept any responsibility or liability for actions that may result from this data being intercepted or accessed by an unauthorized third-party.” In other words, if it all goes Pear shaped “We aint takin no responsibility “. None the less, this does seem to be a good concept for breaking things down to a simple level, my fear is that it is too simple. This current version will not enable content editors to add a new page - for that, they will have to go back to their webdesigner.

Made By Frog

Technology : PHP
RDMS: a MySQL database or SQLite 3
Setup time: 45 minutes+ Supported OS: *Nix (Apache)

Features:

  • On page editing
  • Simple Philosophy
  • Add pages & Images
  • Extendable, includes an API
  • Uses Templating Code.

URL: http://www.madebyfrog.com/
SUPPORT FORUM:
http://forum.madebyfrog.com/

Created as a PHP port of Radiant CMS (Ruby on Rails app), Frog CMS carries the motto “Fast and Simple”. And it stands up to the test - we found that it took up quite a bit smaller memory footprint than the Ruby equivalent. The learning curve (provided you know a bit about PHP) is also relatively fast, and you can be up and running with a content managed solution in as little as 45 minutes. Complimenting the main site is a support forum, and good clear documentation. However if you are a complete PHP newbie, this one probably is still a bit involved, and although it uses a templating system, it will still prove to be a pain to implement - say over something like Wordpress. We also found that the download on their site was corrupt, and had to grab it via Tortoise SVN. We would say to stick out at it though and you will be rewarded in what is an extremely well put together Open Source CMS.

Radiant CMS

Technology : Ruby On Rails
RDMS: MySQL database, PostReSQL, SQLite3
Setup time: 45 minutes+
Supported OS: *Nix (Apache)

Features:

  • Elegant user interface
  • Flexible templating with layouts, snippets, page parts, and a custom tagging language
  • Simple user management and permissions
URL: http://www.radiantcms.com/

This is the product that inspired Frog CMS, and it has pretty much the same layout and feel as Frog, only that it is a Ruby on Rails app. The community around Radiant however does feel to be much more active, and if that is your bag, and you are a Ruby developer, then this is the CMS for you. Thankfully developers have started to break down the barriers to entry for content management systems, and the newer ones such Radiant have concentrated heavily on making things much more friendly for both the end user and web designers. The custom tagging langugage (Radius) is also particularly nice in this system, and should be a breeze for anyone who has done any Ruby work to pick up.

Modx CMS

Technology : PHP
RDMS: MySQL database
Setup time: 45 minutes+
Supported OS: *Nix (Apache)

Features:

  • Strong Web Standards Support
  • Web 2.0 Features
  • Graphical Installer
URL: http://modxcms.com/

The MODx Ajax CMS and PHP Application Framework brings plenty to the table, with as it is a application framework, not only is ModX a CMS, but it is a Web application builder as well, supporting forms creation amongst other things. The templating language for ModX is particularly simple to get to grips with tags placeholders which are easily to integrate. ModX also has a strong focus towards two things close to my heart - search engine optimisation and Web Standards. Its no surprise then that ModX came out winner in the Most Promising Open Source Content Management System of 2007, holding off strong competition from SilverStrip, Nuke Evolution, Typolight and dotCMS - all reviewed here. “MODx is the alternative to hacking blogging tools and other tools to death, extended learning curves, and changing your workflow to fit software that just doesn’t quite “get it”. MODx allows you to focus on usability, design, content and building great sites, not on the tools that build them.”

SilverStripe

Technology : PHP
RDMS: MySQL database
Setup time: 30 minutes+
Supported OS: Windows/Linux/Mac

Features:

  • Online image editor
  • Widgets
  • User Defined Forms
  • Search Engine Optimised
  • Windows and PHP installer.
  • Version Control
URL: http://www.silverstripe.com

SilverStripe is an open source product born out of an existing closed source one. The small New Zealand based company decided last year to offer its innovative CMS to customers free, and as a result has achieved over 100,000 downloads of the system. And its no surprise why. SilverStripe is Wordpress on steroids, and because it is completely tailored towards content management, and not blogging, (although it can do this too) you wont be disappointed with the features. SilverStripe shinks (uploaded) images on the fly, has support for drafts and preview, allows users to review and roll back (version control) and has support for SEO out of the box (including URL rewriting). Its target market - is somewhere between Wordpress users and Mambo or Drupal which is perfect for the small to mid-sized development team. The companies credentials are also sound - Just last it achieved support from Google - in the form of Google’s summer of code 2007. Recently Sun did a bit of a case study on them too. We are keeping a close eye on this badboy.

Alfresco

Technology : JSP
RDMS: MySQL 5, Oracle 10
Setup time: 15 minutes+
Supported OS: Red Hat Enterprise, Sun Solaris 10, Windows Server 2003

Features:

  • Enterprise Level solution
  • Micro Sites
  • WebDAV / LDAP Authentication
  • Version Control
  • Convert PDF to Text via upload
  • Version Control

URL: http://www.alfresco.com

As an enterprise solution I expected this to be a typical “community” edition, pushing a closed source version with additional features at a premium. Not so with Alfresco, the only difference being the level of support your receive from the team. Installing Alfresco is a breeze, with database setup and other configuration done for you after answering a few questions - I had my test setup running on a Windows 2003 Server in about 15 minutes. Dropping different types of document into folders (spaces) generates new content on the site, and when combined with rules, enables web publishers to use PDF’s directly as web content. They would appear at first glance to be going after the Microsoft Sharepoint market, however compared to commercial content management and portal offerings, Alfresco lacks advanced workflow tools.

Typolight

Technology : PHP
RDMS: MySQL starting from 4.1, MySQLi, Oracle, MSSQL, PostgreSQL, Sybase
Setup time: 5-10 minutes+
Supported OS: Windows (IIS) / *Nix (Apache)

URL: http://www.typolight.org/

Features:

  • Modular - easy to Extend
  • MVC architecture
  • Form generators
  • Calendar/events
  • Newsfeeds
Once you begin working with Typolight, you will realise that the capabilities of the product out of the box are extremely impressive. There is alot more functionality when comparing to other CMS systems out there, but fortunately aren’t so many features as to overpower the end user or administrators with them. User rights are extremely flexible where you can specify which user gets access to editing which field, which is refreshing compared to say Joomla, which guesses more at user access levels. The system also generates valid XHTML, and WAI accessible code, which is an added bonus.

DotCMS

Technology : J2EE/Java
RDMS: MySQL, Postgresql, MSSQL or Oracle.
Setup time: 60 minutes+
Supported OS: Windows or UNIX servers

Features:

  • Site-wide Templating
  • Streaming MP3 Player
  • Content Relationships
  • Inline Content Editing
  • Content versioning

URL: http://www.dotcms.org

FEATURE URL: http://www.dotcms.org/the_dotcms/features.dot

dotCMS is a portal-based Web Content Management System. It offers a compelling set of features out of the box all on an extensible platform that can be customized to suit just about any Web CMS need - all provided you know your JSP. dotCMS, has gone down the commercialisation route of offering “on-demand” installs. At first impressions, dotCMS’s admin screens appeared relatively complex- I didn’t automatically know where to go and what to do when I had logged in, and for that reason - regardless of the functionality it took some time to get to grips with.

Umbraco

Technology : ASP.NET (C#)
RDMS: MS SQL
Setup time: 10 minutes+
Supported OS: Windows

Features:

  • Super simple template engine
  • Full support for Ajax frameworks like Script.aculo.us or ASP.NET Ajax
  • Scheduled publishing
  • Support for any .NET Language including C# and VB.NET

URL: http://www.umbraco.org

If you are a Microsoft aficionado, you will be quite aware that open source projects on the .NET platform are few and far between. The same is true with CMS systems, with (to my knowledge) only DotNetNuke, and Umbraco contending for the position of best ASP.NET open source content management solution. It’s a further bonus to discover that not only is umbraco open source, but its also an awesome, well built piece of software. As with most CMS systems being developed now, Umbraco is too committed to webstandards, and indeed has focused on provding at platform to achieve perfect CSS and XHTML zen. It utilises XSLT to style content, so a knowledge of this would be an advantage - although its not a necessity. We were up and running within about 10 minutes - the .NET installer script setting up the database etc, all we had to do was set some bits and pieces in IIS. If you are a .NET developer - go grab a copy, as the user community has also achieved notarity- winning awards - you know that you’ll be backed up with exceptional support.

CMS Made Simple

Technology : PHP
RDMS: MySQL
Setup time: 15 minutes+
Supported OS: *Nix

Features:

  • Modular and extensible
  • Minimal server requirements
  • Small footprint
  • Content hierarchy with unlimited depth and size
URL: http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/

FEATURE URL: http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/features/

To get a site up with CMS Made Simple is just that, simple. For those with more advanced ambitions there are plenty of addons to download. And there is an excellent community at your service. The cms admin system is very clean - both from a code and design perspective. We found the learning curve quite gradual, which is an extremely important point in a CMS. The third party modules being developed add additional value to the project - with everything from E-commerce to core Translation.

Drupal

Technology : PHP
RDMS: MySQL/PostgreSQL
Setup time: 45 minutes+
Supported OS: *Nix and Windows

Features:

  • Friendly URLs
  • Modules & Support
  • Personalisation
URL: http://drupal.org/
FEATURE URL:
http://drupal.org/features

Unlike Mambo, it is easy to hack the templates, layout, menus and navigation of a Drupal site, which make it the perfect system for developers and designers alike. It’s architecture is somewhat difficult to get to grips with, and this is made no easier with its own jargon throughout the documentation - but when you bite through its tough exterior, Drupal is an extremely juicy fruit in the middle - and its juice definitely worth the squeeze. The search engine optimisation support is second to none, with super friendly URL’s - which is what you would expect from a system of this size. Primarily Drupal’s strength lies in its user contributed modules allowing you to extend functionality by easily installing the functionality required. At time of writing there were over 3500 user contributed modules on the site.

Mambo

Technology : PHP
RDMS: MySQL/PostgreSQL
Setup time: 35 minutes+
Supported OS: *Nix and Windows

Features:

  • Page caching
  • Content macro language (mambots)
  • visitor statistics
  • Voting / Polls
  • Internationalisation

URL: http://mambo-foundation.org/

First impressions with Mambo is that its interface is very clean and usable, however development of the system has been somewhat overtaken, by Joomla. For the un-initiated, Joomla is a fork of the main mambo trunk, and some of the leads development team left to set up Joomla. Fast forward a few years, and Joomla wins last year’s Open Source awards. Anyway, politics aside, the system is still of Enterprise Quality, and extremely feature rich. It can be easily configured to allow registered users to log in and edit pages via the web, as we would expect the tools made available for authors are straightforward and require little or no training. From a developer perspective, some decent documentation is available at http://mambo-manual.org.

With over 500 CMS systems out there…we couldn’t review them all. But if there isn’t anything in here to meet your needs, maybe some of these will. If there are any we have missed here let us know..Feel free to comment.

Amazons Kindle out of stock till after christmas!

Hoping to buy an Amazon Kindle for the book lover on your gift list? Wait 'til next year. Or pray. Or try eBay.

Amazon says its Kindle will take "11 to 13 weeks" to ship and that it will arrive "after December 24." We assume that means the Kindle 1.0 is totally sold out -- Amazon (AMZN) will introduce new Kindles early next year. (Did Oprah's recent endorsement do the trick?)

We're not sure how many people were planning on spending $360 on Christmas gifts this year. And certainly some people will order one anyway, even if it doesn't show up in time for the holidays. But it's going to result in some lost revenue for Amazon this quarter.

Free desktop search tool Locate32

Locate32 is software which can be used to find files from your hard drives and other locations. It works like updatedb and locate commands in Unix based systems. In other words, it uses databases to store information about directory structures and uses these databases in searches. The use of these databases provides very fast searching speed. The software includes a dialog based application as well as console programs which can be used to both update and access databases. Supported operation systems are Windows 98/ME/NT4/2000/XP/Vista.

With today's broadband connections its not uncommon to find yourself in need of a good desktop search tool! Drives get loaded up very fast and a 1 terabyte hard drive is not uncommon, its just hard to keep up if your like most you download and then sort later! Get rid of all those nasty shortcuts all over your nice wallpaper and quit manually searching for that one file you know you have somewhere! Time is money so they say, so use that valuable time to complete other tasks and get one of these nice desktop search programs. I personally like locate32 its 100% free donationware. There are other choices, Ive listed them below this post for your convenience. If you happen to know of any others let us know in the comments.

New Features on Live Webmaster Center!

The Live Search team has just rolled out some useful new features for the Webmaster Center. If you’re using this Microsoft service aside from Google Webmaster Central you might appreciate these new features. If not, you might as well read on and who knows you might start using the Webmaster Center from now on.

First of these new features and the most important in fact is the Webmaster Center’s malware detection procedure. It now more efficiently detects whether your webpages and the webpages your site links to are infected with malwares. Once the Webmaster Center malware detection tool found any existence of malwares in those links, it will immediately flagged the links and notify you in your next search results that those links contain malwares. In addition, you can now download detailed reports of malware attacks on your websites and even includes ways to fix it. Once you’ve fixed your site, you can immediately ping the Live Search team to have your sites re-scanned and re-included in Live Search results as quickly as possible.

The other two new features are simplified authentication and outbound links filtering tool. With the new feature you only need to use one authentication code for all the sites that you own which you’ve listed in the your Webmaster Center account. If you have multiple authentication codes before, they will still be supported even if the new features are already on. And a bonus feature, the Webmaster Center will treat the last successful authentication method that you will do on your sites will become the default method for then on.

The last new feature is the outbound links tool which would enable you to filter those links which points to sites with malwares. This way you can prevent your site users from landing on sites which have malwares waiting to attack your users’ computers.

Make 100 dollars a day!

I just realized something! This entire blog is filled with ideas on how to help your sites make more money and receive more traffic, but I don’t have a single post that says, HEY! HERE IS HOW YOU MAKE MONEY ONLINE. I want a post that tells you exactly how to reach your goals. A comment in another post (I do read them and get inspired by them) reminded me of this. So I perused through some old projects of mine and grabbed one thats very easy, very automated, reciprocal (consistantly makes money forever), and makes about a $100/day. Most of all it requires very minimal time and investment. So here ya go! Follow the instructions carefully and do as I did.

Here Is What You Do

1) Pick a generalized niche that is fairly popular. Celebrities work well, cars, animals. Anything will do.

2) Make a list of 300 items in that niche. For instance if you pick music artists make a list of the top 300 most popular music artists.

3) Download at least 20 public use(noncopyrighted) pictures of each item in your list.

4) Download or buy a screensaver maker. I don’t remember which one I use so I’ll have to update you in the comments when I get back to the office on Monday. Just make sure it is quick and easy to create the screensavers (saves you a lot of time) and comes with an exe output function that’ll easily install the screensavers on their computer without much dialog boxes or windows getting in thier way. This one looks decent. Easy Screensaver Maker and its only $25. Update: I use Screen Saver Builder. It’s $20 with fully functioning 21 day trial.

5)
Create all your screensavers and put them up on a simple website. Give each screensaver its own page and download link. It also never hurts to SEO the site so it’ll do well in the search engines and make you even more money later on. Adsense also doesn’t hurt for a lil’ bit of extra cash.

6) Signup with Zangocash (Aff Link). This step is optional. See the comments for more ideas on how to monenize your new screensavers.

7)
Talk to your account manager and ask him to bundle Zango software with your screensavers. Send him all the installers along with a textfile containing all the short descriptions and a sample picture. They are usually happy to do this for you. If they aren’t get a new account manager.

8)
Get yourself a copy of Promosoft software submitter(nonAff link). I think it costs $95 for a copy but trust me it’s well worth it.

9) Follow the instructions on Promosoft to create the PAD files(product description files used for software sites) and submit each screensaver to hundreds of software and screensaver directories.

There you go. You will get paid $0.45 for every person who installs your screensaver. Once the screensavers are submitted you will have no problem getting tons of people downloading them everyday. If you get about 250 downloads per day(easy with 300 screensavers) you will easily make about a $100/day!

Okay so now all those people on forums and such who are bitching and moaning; saying stuff like “I want to quit my day job” and “I wish I could make a living online” can finally shut up. It is all right there, spelled out in plain english. You now have absolutely no excuses. Get off your ass and actually do it. Follow each step carefully and do a good job. It should take the average person no more than a couple days to get it done and you will make continuous money for a very long time. If you’re reading this and you suddenly realize that you are one of those people, just know that there is nothing wrong with that. We were all there. You just have to know when to quit. Quit searching forums for ideas. Quit buying ebooks hoping they’ll give that magical $100/day project idea. Quit asking “SEO experts” how they do it, and for God’s sake quit reading blogs hoping someone will post something like this, cus it just ain’t gonna happen(haha). All I expect from you is to read this post throughly and carefully at least two more times and actually follow through. There is nothing more I would love, than to hear someone tell me that an article I wrote helped them quit their job in the next 8 weeks. So make it happen!

Reaper Digital Audio Workstation!

When you first launch Reaper you won't get any nasty surprises: its general layout follows that of most other MIDI + Audio sequencers, making it very easy to get into. There's the usual bar of drop-down menu commands across the top, with an icon-based toolbar beneath. To the right of this is a timeline, where you can click and drag with the mouse to define song selections and loops, while each of the horizontal track panes in the main area displaying audio or MIDI 'media clips' has its own Track Control Panel to the left, rather like the Cubase Inspector.

However, one major difference between Reaper and many other audio applications is that you can dock various of its windows onto the bottom Docker area of the main window and choose between them via tabs. Some of the items you can dock include the Mixer, a Media Explorer for importing MIDI or audio files, rather like that of Sonic Foundry's Acid, the Undo History, a Big Clock display, a virtual MIDI keyboard, an incredibly detailed Performance meter, and the very versatile Routing Matrix.

This is just so much easier than navigating between a host of floating windows containing mixers, FX, instruments, transport controls and so on, and of course you'll never lose one window behind all the rest. By default, Reaper places a transport bar beneath the main 'arrange' area, with the mixer in the Docker area across the bottom of the screen, but you can undock these and revert to floating window versions if you wish, or detach the entire Docker area and let it float on top wherever you wish. In this mode it features variable opacity, so you can still see what's going on 'underneath' it.

All of the various display areas and individual windows are resizeable, so you can, for instance, keep the mixer manageably small during the recording and arranging phases, then create really tall meters and faders during mixdown to better view your channel levels and edit your automation moves.

There is also a huge number of context-sensitive options available via a right-click with your mouse over different areas of the screen, while the Reaper Preferences dialogue covers a huge amount of ground, from general choices and keyboard shortcuts through a host of audio and MIDI settings, appearance options (there are also at least 50 colour schemes on offer, or you can create personalised 'skins'), editing and mouse behaviour, plug-in and visualisation settings, as well as options to add MIDI Control Surfaces and point to External Editors. This last meant that for the first time I could leap straight into my preferred Wavelab to work on WAV files, which you can't even do from Cubase, even though both are Steinberg products. Frankly, I was amazed by the number of options, and what's more, the default settings let newbies get stuck in straight away without getting bogged down.

One of the most exciting aspects of Reaper is its flexible routing (see screen above). Unlike most other sequencers, it allows you to set up almost any routing regime you can think of. Each track has its own green I/O button that appears both in the Track Control Panel to the left of the Track pane and in the appropriate channel in the mixer. Clicking on this button launches a dialogue window where you can decide where the output from the track is sent, although there's a sensible default routing which means that the novice can get started without being slowed down by all the options: by default, the outputs of all the tracks are routed to the Master stereo output in the mixer, which in turn is routed to the first two channels of your audio interface.

If, for instance, you want to set up a send and return for adding global effects like reverb or chorus, you just insert a new track (let's name it 'FX Reverb'), add your choice of effect plug-in to it, and then click on the I/O button of any track to which you want to add this effect. Among the comprehensive list of routing possibilities are sections headed Sends and Receives; you just tick the box in the Sends list named 'FX Reverb' and new level and pan faders appear beneath the tick box so you can set up send levels, along with the option to place the send before or after the insert effects and channel fader. Helpfully, when you next look at the I/O Routing for the 'FX Reverb' track, the Receives section will now display all the send faders routed to it, so you can tweak all your reverb levels in one place.

Thus each track can also function as a bus with lots of other tracks routed to it, whether as an effects send or a group channel. Conversely, using the various tick-box areas in the channel Routing windows, each track can also be sent to any number of other tracks, which is great if you want to run several simultaneous insert effects in parallel, for instance, or to split a single track into several frequency bands and apply further plug-in effects to each one. Each track can also be routed to any number of different hardware outputs, which could be handy for analogue summing or monitoring.

Using all these routing features and suitable effect plug-ins, it's also comparatively easy to set up side-chaining (where one track is used to 'key' a dynamics processor on another, such as when the kick drum is used to 'duck' the level of the bass line, or a pad sound is rhythmically gated by percussive elements from elsewhere). I'll return to the subject of side-chaining when I take a look at the bundled Cockos plug-ins, since some of these provide four inputs (main stereo input and stereo detector input) to help you perform such trickery. Cubase users are still waiting for such features, despite many requests over the years!

Other routing features in Reaper include Reamote, a way to link multiple PCs in a network and use the remote ones to add extra processing clout to your main computer. To do this you just install Reaper on each machine and then enable Reamote on the master machine from the Preferences menu. This in turn searches for Reamote slave machines on the network and adds their plug-in list to the armoury. There's also support for Propellerhead Software's Rewire, which allows you to connect Reaper to other similarly equipped audio applications, such as Cubase, Reason and Sonar, and send MIDI and audio data between them in perfect sync.

Rearoute, which was originally intended as a replacement for Rewire, before support for this was later added, is also worth mentioning. It's an optional ASIO driver that provides 16 inputs and outputs so you can send audio to or receive it from another application. It's still there as an option, and is certainly handy if you want to work with non-Rewire applications.

Finally, Reaper provides the Routing Matrix window (above) for those who want ultimate control over routing. This is a table displaying all possible sources down the left side, including track inputs, hardware inputs, and Rearoute inputs if enabled, and all the destinations from left to right, including track outputs, hardware outputs and Rearoute outputs. Here you can click on each input to Record Arm it, while where an input row intersects an output column, all your interconnections, such as sends, can be easily seen. New connections can be created by left-clicking, and the send level/pan settings and routing options can be edited by right-clicking to launch a small window containing the relevant controls.

Overall, this is an incredibly versatile system, which can be largely ignored by the novice, yet enthusiastically explored by the more experienced. It will certainly appeal to those familiar with traditional patchbays, who have been used to being able to plug any studio output into any input.
